Work With Us

Indianapolis Monthly is Indiana’s authoritative general interest magazine, providing readers with compelling narrative stories and smart, lively service pieces. Our writing doesn’t just provide Indy readers with the information they need about the community. It sparks conversation about politics, sports, crime, lifestyle, entertainment, restaurants, culture, business, and the big personalities that make the Circle City go ‘round—and we want you to help us do it.

How To Pitch Us

We’re accepting pitches for our Circle City (local news, politics, and business), Dish (dining), Good Life (lifestyle, wellness, home, shopping, and travel), and Ticket (entertainment, sports, and events) sections, as well as for longform narrative writing that tells novel and gripping stories from a unique perspective. We tell stories indigenous to Indianapolis and the surrounding communities about Hoosiers, whether they’re opening a buzzy new restaurant, organizing their community, or redefining what it means to be a Hoosier in the first place.

Before you pitch, familiarize yourself with our previous coverage of the area in which you’re hoping to write. Ask yourself whether your idea fits our core mission, how you’ll execute it, and why it should be written now. If you’re hoping to write for our print magazine, pitch three or four months in advance to allow for the production process. Submit a pitch of a few paragraphs, even if you’ve already written a draft. Let us know a little bit about yourself, and your journalistic experience and interests. We’re building a community of writers who are passionate about Indianapolis and Indiana stories and want to deliver readers the journalism they deserve, and the better we know you the better we can build that together.
