Obama Picks IU to Win It All

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably heard that President Barack Obama has penciled in Indiana at the top of his bracket for the 2013 NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

By now, of course, the release of the basketball-junkie-in-chief’s March Madness picks have become something of an annual tradition. This marks the first time in six years he hasn’t picked North Carolina or Kansas to win it all, and he accurately predicted IU’s loss to Kentucky in the Sweet 16 last year.

Number-one seed IU plays its first game of the tournament against 16 seed James Madison in Dayton on Friday at 4:10 p.m. (TBS).

“I’m ready to win some money here,” Mr. Obama told ESPN’s Andy Katz. But before you get too excited about the endorsement, Hoosier Nation, consider his track record:

2012 — Obama’s pick: North Carolina. Actual finish: Elite Eight. Winner: Kentucky.

2011 — Obama’s pick: Kansas. Actual finish: Elite Eight. Winner: Connecticut.

2010 — Obama’s pick: Kansas. Actual finish: second round. Winner: Duke.

2009 — Obama’s pick: North Carolina. Actual finish: Championship game. Winner: North Carolina.

2008 — Obama’s pick: North Carolina. Actual finish: Final Four. Winner: Kansas.

In case you’re not counting, that’s one winner for Mr. Obama in five years serving as (or running for) president.

Let’s hope he has better luck this time.
