Super Bowl Official Poster Unveiled
The official poster for Super Bowl XLVI was revealed last night in the Conrad hotel’s west foyer. The artwork depicts the Soldiers and Sailors Monument’s iconic Victory statue bursting up and out of a football, with a kinetic explosion of starry confetti and Lucas Oil Stadium as a backdrop.
On hand to speak were the renowned artist behind the piece, Walter Knabe; the president and CEO of the Host Committee, Allison Melangton; and David Lawrence, co-chair of the Cultural and Arts Program Committee. Lawrence’s committee was responsible for choosing the poster design.
“We wanted a work of art by an Indiana artist,” Lawrence says of Knabe, who hails from Indiana with a studio in New York. Knabe’s work has been shown and lauded the world over. He specializes in fabrics and wallcoverings, with such luminaries as Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, and Madonna adorning their homes with his materials.
Says the artist: “I wanted it to be pretty democratic so that everybody would get it, and I wanted it to be celebratory.” Knabe adds that, compared to some other national, high-profile projects he works on, “It’s more endeared to me.”
Melangton, who previously collaborated with Knabe for an art piece when she worked at USA Gymnastics, calls the artist “an amazing asset to this community.” She notes that “Sport and art work incredibly well together in this community.”
What do you think of Knabe’s representation of the big game and the city of Indianapolis?
