August 2012: Twenty-two-year-old Indiana Pacers player Paul George throws down a reverse-360, between-the-legs dunk that sends his Shanghai audience into a frenzy at the Festival of Sport. What’s more, the NBA All-Star Game slam-dunk contestant performed the dunk without warming up. Even better: LeBron James shouted him out afterward on Twitter.
When I was a high school freshman, my dream was to be the star of the stage. I performed in two plays that year, but after failing to make the musical cast the following fall, I joined the speech team and found my true calling in public speaking. The BMW Championship (Sept. 3-9, 2012) is running an interactive event called “Place the Pin.” Eighteen golf pin flag exhibits are traveling throughout Carmel and Indianapolis, waiting for fans to discover them. Each day, clues about the pin flag locations are shared with Twitter followers of the BMW Championships. All you have to do to win is snap a photo of yourself with a located pin, tweet it to the tournament’s Twitter account, @BMWchamps (with hashtag #BMWPlacethePin), and thus enter to win daily ticket prizes to the impending PGA event.
Barbie, G.I. Joe, crayons, and Silly Putty are among the top 20 toys selected in the Children Museum’s current interactive project, Top 100 Toys (& their Stories) that Define Our Childhood. More than 20,000 votes were cast to determine these “best” toys out of the 100 curator selections. Toy lovers now have until Sept. 7 to vote on what toys take home Olympics-inspired gold, silver, and bronze awards. (See IM staffers’ own favorites here.)
