We were on the track with the fastest in the world at the Grand Prix and Indy 500 qualifiers.

“The two people who influence our destiny the most are the engine manufacturer and the tire manufacturer,” says Team Penske engineer Ron Ruzewski. “The only thing we don’t control is the space between the car and the ground.”

This is the first time champagne bottles have specially designed in the four-year history of the Grand Prix. Krisiloff’s goal is for the bottles to become an extension of the trophies drivers and fans traditionally see after races.

“I think when people see it, they move out of the way,” Pagenaud says of the car’s gaudy color scheme. “It’s disturbing. So it’s perfect.”

“I don’t know if that’s stupidity or what, but I’m not nervous at all,” said McAfee. “I’m just very excited.”

“I have to be an owner, more so than a father,” says Bobby Rahal. “It’s not just all about him. It’s all about everyone else on the team, too.”

After two quick tours around the circuit, the second of which involved a brief battle with Helio Castroneves down the main straight, we peeled into pit lane and roared back to the team’s garage.

“Domestic violence impacts our families and friends, our workplaces, and our communities,” said Castroneves. “I’m encouraging racing fans to clean out their drawers and donate their old phones and accessories.”
