The last time this transgender icon set foot on IU’s Bloomington campus, she was a “gender–non-conforming” freshman in leopard-print bellbottoms.

Says the actress, “It is my belief that the greatest obstacles facing the transgender community are points of view that disavow our identities and suggest that no matter what we do, we are always the gender we are assigned at birth.”

For Kristine Bunch, prison was not hypothetical. It was her life—unjustly, she maintains—for more than 16 years before she was able to gather enough evidence, with the help of Northwestern’s Center on Wrongful Convictions, to convince appellate judges she had been wrongly imprisoned for arson and the murder of her son.
