I have a new semantic bone to pick: overuse of the adjective “amazing,” which now describes everything from a red-carpet gown to a robot.

“Many of my friends woke up at 3 years of age and said, ‘I have to be onstage.’ I never had that,” Streep said to her Bloomington audience. “I’ve always been an omnivore, interested in way too many things, but I found the one profession that fed all my appetites.”

For her role as a pill-popping matriarch in this season’s August: Osage County, Streep has been nominated in the Best Actress category at Sunday’s Academy Awards. It’s the eighteenth nomination of her film career, more than any other actor in history.
