Indy’s own delivered the best overall vocal of the night. It’s belted high notes that get America’s votes, and Kaufman delivered his own with a side of Hoosier humility.

As you can see, his signature gap-toothed look hasn’t wandered over the years. Trivia: Jeff Smulyan, CEO of Emmis Communications, IM’s parent company, was Letterman’s second boss after the future star graduated from Ball State University.

The Hoosierist always figured television station call letters were burped out by a computer in the basement of the FCC’s headquarters. Boy, was he wrong.

WTHR-TV will be honored for its broadcasts with two National Edward R. Murrow Awards on October 8. The coveted prizes recognize outstanding “electronic” journalism at the national level and in TV and radio markets both large and small. Representatives from the station will receive the awards at a ceremony in New York City.
