Art and Health Converge at Eskenazi Hospital
Art is everywhere you look, and that truism goes full tilt at the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and Health campus, which opened December 7. Glance up in the main lobby and you’ll see Aaron T. Shephan’s Paths Crossed suspended above. Wait for an elevator, and an interactive piece—Kyle Perry and Adam Buente’s PROJECTiONE—will follow your movements with light. Sit in the adult-and-pediatric primary-care waiting room and witness Richard Ross’s Collective Memory, displaying a grid of photos taken by Indianapolis residents, hanging above you.
The unique aspect of this art is that all the pieces are originals. The Eskenazi art committee selected the artists, with input from the Indianapolis community. Another key feature inside Eskenazi Health arrived in the form of a public piano sitting in the main lobby, available for anyone to play. You might even see a surgeon tapping out a few tunes while on a break. One need not have an emergency at hand to enter this remarkable edifice and either take in or take part in the art and the goings-on.
