Hoosier Lobbying: Are You Not Entertained?
Editor’s Note: IM takes a behind-the-scenes look at how Indiana Statehouse lobbyists ply their trade in this revealing series of articles from the March 2014 issue.
Special interests pay handsomely for the chance to put their stamp on Indiana politics. But in 2013, according to ILRC records, lobbyists themselves spent a comparatively paltry $4,000 on meals, hotel stays, and tickets to events and attractions for individual lawmakers, not including any gifts that might have fallen under the mandatory $50 reporting threshold. (Gift reports from 2014 and the end of last year were not available as of this writing.) Which goes to show that if you can’t get rich being a state legislator, at least it gets you out of the house.
