The Replay: Reggie Wayne, Pacers, and Justin Wilson

Every Friday, we post up The Replay, our weekly look at sports. It’s mostly fouls and airballs.

» Cold Reception: Reggie Wayne found a new job this week and angered an awful lot people, many of whom didn’t realize traitor and trader are something called homonyms, words that might sound the same but have different meanings. The Star got the words straight, but little else in a full-page photo-headline-column combo when it asked readers if the ex-Colts receiver was a “Patriot or Traitor?” That’s completely silly, like asking if The Star is a newspaper or cynical Web-based click-bait troll:

» Luxury Tax: The Capital Improvement Board granted the Pacers approval to built a $50 million practice facility in what is now a parking lot on Delaware Street across from Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Pacers will build and own the proposed five-story building on land leased for $1 per year, but likely won’t have to pay the city an estimated $1.5 million in property taxes per year. Pacers spokesman Bill Benner says the franchise needs the new facility “to stay competitive in the NBA.” Other facilities around the league offer amenities like luxury theaters, barber shops/spas, and auto-detailing centers. So, the CIB be like:

And the players are all:

And we’re like:

Because we are idiots.

» Speaking of Being Sold a Load of Crap: The Colts, who are 0-2 in the preseason, take on the Rams Saturday. Key to the game? Indy needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror.

» Poor Shots Selection: Big news out of Bloomington this week as IU men’s basketball coach Tom Crean might have to dismiss two from his team, but still has enough for a starting five.

» Happy Birthday Reggie! Reggie Miller turned 50 this week. But Michael Jordan, of course, beat him there:

» Justin Wilson (1978–2015): IndyCar’s Justin Wilson died Monday after a weekend accident at Pocono Speedway. There’s no shortage of good stories about Wilson, including photos and a remembrance from IM contributor Kate Shoup and a look at the driver’s career from Jalopnik.

» Now Read This: Texas Monthly dives deep into the controversy surrounding a football player at Baylor found guilty of second-degree sexual assault.
