Tweets of the Week: Obama Does Indy Edition
President Barack Obama visited Indianapolis for a few hours on Friday, making a town hall–style stop at Ivy Tech Community College just north of downtown. Sounding like he actually has another campaign to run, he stumped for his concept of two free years of community college for students nationwide. Of course a barrage of tweets arrived in Indy with him. Here’s a smattering of the best and most entertaining posts, plus video (at the end) of his take on Tamika Catchings, the city’s beloved WNBA star.
The tweets began before Air Force One had even touched down at Indianapolis International Airport, and some of them were thinly veiled #humblebrags:
Looking forward 2 an upgraded flight back 2 #Indy w/ Pres @BarackObama on Air Force One, where we can discuss issues important 2 Hoosiers

As it turned out, IND itself wasn’t to be outdone in that department:
Welcome @BarackObama! Did you see the world's largest airport solar farm as you landed? #Indy and @IPLPower are leaders in solar generation.

Mayor Greg Ballard cast aside any political differences for the day. Indeed, it’s not so often that the leader of the free world descends onto one’s roost.
It's always a great day for Indianapolis when the President of the United States visits!

Some parties couldn’t help but cloak their usual musings in greeting POTUS:
Welcome to #Indy Mr. President @BarackObama. It's mostly cloudy and 31 degrees.

President Obama certainly played to a full house at Ivy Tech. No word yet on whether the same was true for the erstwhile Uncle Joey at Crackers Comedy Club.
@GoIndyGo cut. it. out.

The nearby Children’s Museum deftly documented the president’s entourage pulling through town.

It’s no State of the Union–esque “I know, because I won them all” one-liner, but it’ll do.
"When it comes to elections (in #Indiana), I'm batting .500, but that's why I wanted to come back here." @BarackObama in #Indy. @93wibc

Here, POTUS revealed he’s just as in tune with the NBA’s goings-on (or goings-off) as he is with domestic policy. And to this we can only say, “Us, too, Mr. President. Us, too.”

Even Obama had to sound out “I-U-P-U-I” among his remarks.
Hahahaha Obama just stumbled over "IUPUI".

At least one local business knew just how to amusingly frame the president’s visit for its own benefit:
@BarackObama Indy knows you must be worn from running the country. If you need a stimulus package for your next meeting stop by the Foundry!

One Democratic operative was quite pleased with the results of Obama’s showing at Ivy Tech:
I love watching calm, relaxed @BarackObama answer questions from optimistic young people. #obamaivytech

And the president made sure to leave us with a few quotables:
You didn't elect us to "turn everything into a Washington food fight" @FOX59

At one point, Eddie White of the Indiana Pacers organization beseeched President Obama to take on the Indiana Fever’s Tamika Catchings in a friendly game of one-on-one basketball. The president, describing his game as rusty, demurred—but not before noting that Catchings actually served as referee for his three-on-three hoops encounter in Kokomo during the 2008 presidential primary race. Here’s the full clip:
