If you haven’t caught the documentary For Gold and Glory on WFYI 1 Public Television, you might be unfamiliar with the story of Charlie Wiggins, the mechanic whom Indy 500 champ Bill Cummings credited for his 1934 win. In the early 20th century, Wiggins, an Indianapolis resident, came to be known as the “Negro Speed King” in African-American newspapers for his prowess on racetracks, and he was widely considered the nation’s best African-American racecar driver of the early 20th century. (He might have been the best overall, though he was barred from competing in segregated events, including the Indianapolis 500, because of his race.)

If you haven’t yet been to see TURF: IDADA Art Pavilion, make the trip to 202 N. Alabama St. before Super Sunday draws to a close. It’s possible that the Super Bowl won’t be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Naptowers after all, but stepping into a 1930s-era séance probably will be.

Everyone has a favorite sandwich, and coming up with a list that visitors must try means wandering into dangerous territory. But a mob of hungry football fans is heading our way, so it had to be done. With Hoosier hospitality in mind, Indianapolis Monthly and the Indiana Office of Tourism Development chose 46 of the state’s standouts in time for the Super Bowl. To spread the love of the big game to those who can’t quite make it to Lucas Oil Stadium, the Super Bowl Host Committee announced 20 Super Celebration sites around central Indiana to offer family-friendly entertainment and up the excitement for the main event.

You can’t deny that commercials have their own special place in the hearts of football game watchers everywhere. While a few might fall flat, most are pretty funny/silly/crazy/amazing in their creativity and longevity. There’s even a website dedicated to these short films, and every year media experts give their two cents about the individual commercials and what they think of that year’s crop of commercials as a whole.
