New in Town: Wyliepalooza’s Ice Cream Emporium
While dining in Irvington recently, Cassandra Salimeno noted one glaring omission in the community’s culinary landscape: an ice-cream shop. With the help of her mother, former Captain Java coffeehouse owner Patty Timmons, the San Francisco native decided to fill that void with Wyliepalooza’s Ice Cream Emporium. She en- visioned the store, named after her 4-year-old daughter, Wylie (pictured above), as a family-friendly hangout featuring scoops from local vendor Lick Ice Cream as well as Bang-brand caffeinated ice cream and more-traditional flavors from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream in Wisconsin. Supplementing the dairy: hotdogs, popcorn, bubble teas, and Indy’s first taste of halo halo—a Filipino dessert. “‘Halo halo’ means ‘mix mix.’ So it’s a double mix,” says Timmons. The treat contains sweet red beans, coconut gel, jackfruit, tapioca, taro ice cream, and shaved ice. “You usually add sweetened condensed milk,” Timmons explains. “Because we’re an ice-cream store, we’re adding ice cream.” 5535 E.
