New in Town: Verdigris Antiques
“If it’s ornate, carved, and dipped in gold, I’m going to love it,” says Hillary Steckler, owner of Verdigris in SoBro. Her new antiques emporium bucks the trend of chalk-paint bureaus and upcycled industrial materials and focuses on classic antiques—grown-up pieces that will turn into heirlooms, like 1930s American china cabinets with graceful lines, plate racks, and original hardware. Large-scale pieces such as these run in the several-hundred-dollar range, surprisingly low for the quality and condition (Steckler touches up the furniture just enough, but doesn’t cover the age). Midcentury pieces and artwork are going quickly, along with whimsical accessories like the vintage “All American Lover” sign that was snapped up Tuesday. Other pieces jump out when they depart from the period look, such as a pair of black-rubber bins with handles (Turkish imports made from truck tires), perfect for firewood and just $89 each, and for impulse buys, a “charm bar” lets customers pair a chain with wax-seal metal pendants or wooden pieces with words. But Verdigris (a term for copper that turns green) specializes in elegance and approachable finery. A tall, blue iron piece with the lines of a Gothic church window seems like an irresistible way to transition into the look. 5208 N. College Ave., 317-737-1526, verdigrisindy.com
