Realty Check: What $995K Gets You in Traders Point
As soon as the wrought-iron gates open to the wooded three-acre lot, this property formerly belonging to Traders Point Creamery owners Fritz and Jane Kunz feels like the grounds of a luxe Midwestern ski resort. “We were going for the old-lodge look of the national parks—the hand-hewn timber-frame structures that give a grand but casual feeling,” Fritz says. The couple hired Michigan-based Town and Country Cedar Homes to achieve that cabin aesthetic, starting with a chocolate-colored exterior framed by a hunter-green roof. An outdoorsy vibe also reigns throughout the interior of the 8,763-square-foot residence, with exposed wooden trusses, a pine ceiling in one of the five bedrooms, and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace created with boulders the Kunzes culled from nearby fields. The great room highlights an artful, timbered staircase inspired by famous architects Greene and Greene, known for exposing posts, joints, and pegs for decorative effect.
The Kunzes enjoyed the rustic Traders Point haven for five years before moving to Jane’s grandmother’s farm, where they eventually started the creamery. Surgeon Edward Weisberger and his wife, Donna, bought the home soon after in 2001. The Weisbergers added a backyard pool and turned the cathedral-ceilinged au-pair quarters into the master suite. Edward, an experienced woodworker, built many of the house’s cabinets and shelves. This autumn, the new owners can enjoy the fruits of Edward’s labor as they hunker down in the wine cellar he constructed for the home.
