Our Favorite Houses: Waterside Oasis

Lake living usually means all eyes on the water. But this modern remodel of a 1980s Lake Clearwater home attracts plenty of looks, too. Haus architecture firm opened it up, lifted ceilings, and installed new windows to harness the natural light, key to give their client, Judy Laibe, the peaceful oasis she wanted. The metal standing-seam roof was crucial to the modern look but took convincing with the homeowners’ association.

Inside Story
Raising ceilings made for high, angled rooflines, which Laibe suggested covering with wood, proving that the material isn’t just for floors. The sweeping expanse of white oak overhead warms up the sleek, white-walled contemporary design with a hint of nautical style. A floor-to-ceiling black fireplace adds drama in one corner, and thick black window frames are meant to outline the water views like artwork.
