25 Days of Holiday Gifts: Music-Lover's Journal

Hoosier artist Nathaniel Russell has exhibited his work in Tokyo, Australia, New York, and Los Angeles, and he should be a household name in Indiana for his wry, absurdist point of view expressed with charmingly melancholy illustrations. But when it comes to celebrating the relationship between music and drawing, Russell plays it straight. The artist recently designed a few journals for a California-based line called Plumb Goods, including “Drawn to Music,” intended to encourage sketching while listening to tunes. Inside, an album sleeve contains a poster that says “I can hear music” on one side and “songs to draw, pictures to sing” on the other. Luna Music (5202 N. College Ave., 317-283-5862) stocks the pad for $20. If it’s sold out, check the Plumb Goods website.

Fernandez began writing for Indianapolis Monthly in 1995 while studying journalism at Indiana University. One of her freelance assignments required her to join a women's full-tackle football team for a season. She joined the staff in 2005 to edit IM's ancillary publications, including Indianapolis Monthly Home. In 2011, she became a senior editor responsible for the Circle City section as well as coverage of shopping, homes, and design-related topics. Now a contributing editor for Indianapolis Monthly, she lives in Garfield Park.
