Boy Scouts Cook for Camp

More than 50 Boy Scouts and their troop leaders dished up a hearty grilled lunch this afternoon at the annual Marsh Cookout on the Circle, in an attempt to raise $20,000—enough to send 1,000 Scouts to summer camp.

The event drew a large and lively crowd, including Mayor Greg Ballard, as Elton John and Journey songs played over the loud speakers. Attendees enjoyed chicken sandwiches, brats, potato salad, cookies—and first-rate people watching.

“We’ve got a great crowd,” said event director Thomas Easterday, executive vice president of Subaru of Indiana Automotive. Although it was too early to be certain, he suspected they had reached their fundraising goal, which was good news to Scout Eli Lind, who worked as a runner at the event. “We’d miss out on a lot of opportunities to get merit badges if we didn’t go to camp,” said Lind, “and, well, the water sports.”
