Road Trip: Shopping in Culver, Indiana

Weekending in lake country? Take a shopping break on the U.S. 31 road trip in the charming burg of Culver, a monied community on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee. The scenic drive into town (via Hwy. 110 west of 31 to Hwy. 117 northbound) ribbons around the eastern shore and skims past mammoth Cape Cods. Turn west onto S.R. 10 to go into town, a hamlet that looks like a piece of the Hamptons broken off and plunked down in north-central Indiana.

A handful of boutiques on and near Main Street have all the hostess gifts and new lake-weekend attire you’ll need. Hit up Civvies (114 S. Main St., 574-635-0011, shopcivvies.com) for cute shorts and tops, Diva (109 S. Main St., 574-842-8870, divainculver.com) for adorable hostess gifts, and Elizabeth’s Garden (104 N. Plymouth St., 574-842-4766, on Facebook) for Anthropologie-like accessories and homethings. You’ll also want to grab a bite at the Original Root Beer Stand drive-in (824 E. Lake Shore Dr., 574-842-2122, on Facebook). With our shopping-guide photo gallery, above, you’ll be back on your way in no time.
