One of the Midwest’s newest (and swankest) glamping experiences opened just last year on a working blueberry farm in South Haven, Michigan. Word didn’t take long to get out: All 10 of its tents were booked solid for most of this season, which ends late this month, so nine more are on the way for 2021. Each structure—big enough for two adults and two kids—is cloaked in creamy fabric held up by tree branches, outfitted with a cushy king-size mattress sheathed in elegant cotton and dolled up with throw pillows.

After a day of boating or swimming in nearby Saugatuck, or hiking the trails right there on the grounds, you might retreat to The Fields’s pergola-topped common area for chef-prepared dinners for two (smoked salmon salad, perhaps, or a barbecue platter). Or enjoy the gourmet grub back in your tent, where, if the chilly Michigan wind blows, you’ll find your wood-burning stove already lit. A chic, comfy seating area stocked with books and a reading lamp beckons, as do the stars you can see from your own front porch. Each tent (which includes an en-suite “toilette” and shower with luxe bathroom amenities) gets its own name and theme, so you might find old Girl Scout sashes and Campfire Girl hardcovers in “Spruce Shadows,” for instance.

The Fields is the creation of Irene Wood, an event planner in Chicago who returned to her native South Haven to open this glamp site. She has dreamed up some fine additions for 2021. When the grounds open back up on Memorial Day weekend, happy campers will find a new Treehouse Spa, run by the wellness director currently at the helm of the onsite yoga program. A new bar for healthy smoothies and craft cocktails that make the most of the blueberry harvest and herbs grown nearby is also in the works.

Conceptually, it all pairs well with the s’mores by the fire, where you can toast handmade marshmallows that hint of champagne or peach cobbler. Eat: In South Haven, Pennyroyal Café & Provisions (pennyroyalprovisions.com) is a kindred spirit to The Fields, offering old-fashioned meals that rely on the bounty of Michigan farms.

Hike: Ramble through Saugatuck Dunes State Park, about a half-hour’s drive north, as you make your way to the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Explore: Plenty of excellent wineries such as Cogdal Vineyards (cogdalvineyards.com) are close by. But if you’re with a group, ask The Fields to host an onsite tasting with their trusted sommelier. The rate is $30 an hour plus the cost of the wines you select.
