The Feed: Ukiyo, Love Handle, And More
» There was an unexpected change of plans for the highly anticipated December opening of Ukiyo (4907 College Ave.), chef Neal Brown’s ode to Japanese cuisine. Diners with reservations for the first month received an email this weekend notifying them of a permits issue that will necessitate bumping the debut until January.
» You only have a few more days to grab some biscuits and gravy at Love Handle (2929 E. 10th St., 317-430-5004) before they close up shop for the holidays, and reopen in the new location at 877 Massachusetts Avenue in January. The last day of service at the original 10th Street spot is December 7.
» Main St. Poke (110 W. Main St., Carmel, 317-564-0908) is days away from opening its second location. The downtown Carmel restaurant announced on social media that they’ll open December 9 in Fishers at 8594 East 116th Street.
» The fifth annual St. Elmo’s Shrimp Cocktail Eating Contest is December 2 at 3 p.m. on Georgia Street during the 2017 Big Ten Football Championship festivities. Last year’s champ, Joey Chestnut, is traveling to Indianapolis from his home in San Jose, California, to defend his title, which he won last year after eating 15 pounds of shrimp (equivalent to 45 orders from St. Elmo’s) in eight minutes. The prize purse for the contest is $3,000.
» Broken English Taco Pub (141 S. Meridian St., 317-362-0072) is now open for lunch. The Chicago-based taqueria had its grand opening downtown on November 16, but didn’t add lunch hours until this week.
» The Indy coffee shop scene is about to get another contender. Local roaster Liberation Roasting took to Instagram to tease its entry into the cafe biz. Details are sparse, but the post indicates the future home will be in the Park 100 neighborhood on the northwest side of Indianapolis.
» Speaking of local roasters, Tinker Coffee released its first holiday blend, combining coffee from Colombia for spicy and sweet dark chocolate notes, with the fruit flavors of Ethiopian beans. We’ve got our eyes on the holiday gift set that includes two bags of the new coffee, along with the company’s signature coffee mug ($50).
» And now that we’re in the holiday buying mood, we’re swooning over the gourmet gift-box charcuterie set from Artisan Picnic ($75). Owner Sarah Reuter has curated a collection full of local goodies fit for a good friend or client, and includes products from Smoking Goose Meatery, Batch No. 2, Home Ec Preserves, and My Pretty Little Pretzel.
