Morning Edition: Examining City Market’s Breakfast
The most important meal of the day is no longer a sleepy affair at downtown’s original food court. City Market’s early risers have discovered stick-to-your-ribs fare at stalls like Circle City Soups, where owner Roger Hawkins serves breakfast bowls, chorizo burritos, and a deliciously messy fried-egg BLT with pepper Jack cheese and romesco sauce on a toasted croissant. Three Carrots offers meatless mashups like biscuits with vegan gravy and a surprisingly hearty plate of tofu and grits, while juices enriched with kale and beets at Twenty Two smoothie bar are poured alongside acai bowls heaped with peanut butter, bananas, and hemp granola. Joe Hamgeri and Ian Illig, the new owners of Three Days in Paris creperie, have added morning-friendly specials such as the Newton’s Apple, folded over fig butter, apple slices, brie, walnuts, and spinach. And overlooking it all, the mezzanine level’s recently installed Mile Square Coffee Roastery outpost spreads the java love with coffee flights and Rocket 88 doughnuts.
