Red, White, and Blueberry: Driving Wind Farm
Perfectly timed for your 4th of July holiday pies or berry-topped American flag cakes, the plump, sweet blueberries at Michigan Road’s Driving Wind Blueberry Farm (6410 N. Michigan Rd., 317-257-3001) are now ripe and ready for picking. Just bring along a friend to help—and an eye for the bluest berries. Owing to a cool, wet spring and early summer, the berries at the urban berry patch and produce stand operated by Rev. John Welch and sons David and Joshua ripened somewhat later this year, but they’re especially juicy and flavorful. Picking began on Monday, July 1, and continues, according to the farm’s Facebook posts, on Tuesday, July 2, Thursday, July 4, and Saturday, July 6, from 7 to 11 a.m.
A cozy shop located at the middle of the former horse pasture and landscaping nursery, which stretches nearly 27 acres between 71st Street and Kessler west of one of the Westside’s busiest thoroughfares, also offers local honey (some produced right on the farm), Indiana maple syrup, soaps, beverages, homemade blueberry ice cream, and other season vegetables and fruit. U-Pick berries are $3.99 for those picking more than two pounds—and with berries this good, who would go home with any less?
