Top Five Indiana Backroad Trips
1. All Aboard
Experience the small-town wonders of southern Indiana in Dubois County. You can ride a train to experience landscapes off the beaten path, explore local museums, or take a break with a simple cup of coffee.
2. Pack Mentality
Are you less into in foliage and more interested in the furrier side of wilderness? Maybe you should visit Wolf Park in Tippecanoe County. You can watch wolves frolic after the sun sets during Howl Nights, or, for tamer fare, you can visit nearby Battle Ground for antique shopping, museums, and food.
3. Book Markers
Do you want to get more acquainted with literary history? Visit Hoosier author Gene Stratton-Porter’s Limberlost Cabin in northern Indiana and explore the surrounding wetland preserves that inspired her. If none of that sounds like you, visit nearby Huntington County for a quiet bed and breakfast, antique shopping, and surprisingly fine dining.
4. Southern Exposure
Did you say you wanted eccentric? Then you might want to visit Vevay, where the most famous resident is Fred the Goat, who posthumously had a statue erected in his honor on his favorite hillside. Maybe you could also check out Fred-inspired art at the local gallery, visit a purportedly haunted bed & breakfast, or satisfy your more refined palate at one of the wineries.
5. Just Like Old Times
If you’re ready to hearken back to the old days, then it’s time to visit McCormick’s Creek State Park. Here, you’ll be able to find a pristine nature preserve, with modern nearby gems for exploring and entertainment such as the Cataract General Store or the Tivoli Theatre. From taverns, to diners, to coffee shops, this hidden gem has it all.
