It was clear that not only could Brown sing opera—she had a rare gift. Her upper register was high and melodic, and she commanded it with equal lightness or fullness. Her lower register was deep and mellow.

To the extent that Milan’s victory inspired ‘Hoosiers,’ one could argue that ‘Hoosiers’ returned the favor, enshrining the game in the country’s collective sports-history consciousness. And here, to mark the 50th anniversary of the game that ‘Hoosiers’ celebrates, former Milan players and the film’s cast and crew hold court on making a sports movie for the ages.

Starting now, Hoosiers will mark two centuries of Indiana history with a yearlong party. But what, exactly, are we commemorating?

On Saturday night, celebrities and athletes walked the red carpet on their way into the 2015 Indianapolis 500 Festival Snakepit Ball, the annual pre–Indianapolis 500 fundraiser at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indy.

Saturday in downtown Indianapolis, the 500 Festival Parade featured floats, fans, celebrities, and plenty of excitement as the city gets in the mood for the 2015 Indianapolis 500. Notables in attendance included Pacers Paul George and Frank Vogel, Indy 500 drivers Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon, and former Colt and restaurateur Gary Brackett.

Spectators can expect to see a lot of familiar faces, according to a list of celebrities and notables released this morning.

“There are a lot of historic things that have happened in Indianapolis,” says Wilbon, “whether we’re talking about Negro League baseball or Crispus Attucks High School.”

The players of Crispus Attucks High School wrote a new chapter in the book of Hoosier basketball lore—one in which underdogs could be kids from urban ghettos, could grow up shooting in alleys and parks, could be black and be a vital part of the glory of the game.
