Destination Dining: Follow the Foodies

As we embarked on our own food-driven adventures for the October cover story on Destination Dinner, we couldn’t help asking a few local pros for their favorite meals worth the drive.

Ryan Nelson, Late Harvest Kitchen

“We head to Cincinnati a few times a summer as a family to see a Reds game, and we always try to stop at the FIRESIDE INN in Enochsburg. The fried chicken is unbelievably good! I love small, family-run places that are known for doing a specific dish really well.”

Craig Baker, The Local Eatery & Pub

“I like the WINE STABLE & BREW CO. in Pendleton for burgers, fries, good craft beers, and solid wines.”

Brandon Canfield, The Loft Restaurant at Traders Point Farm Organics

“The DINER GRILL in Chicago is an old railcar diner with about 10 seats. The Dick burger is the way to go—a frozen pre-formed patty on the griddle until crispy, with cheese, bacon, hash browns, and a runny egg. They can only be ordered by the pair, and they aren’t on the menu. The front signage reads Diner Grill, whereas the side reads Dinner Grill. Open 24 hours.”

Dan Dunville, 10-01 Food & Drink

BONGE’S TAVERN in Perkinsville, without a doubt, is my favorite spot. The best thing about it is the party in the parking lot.”

Caleb France, Cerulean

“My favorite place to duck into on my way to Winona Lake is IVANHOES in Upland. The Texan burger and a shake are a must.”

Scott Wise, Scotty’s Brewhouse

CHOP’S WINE BAR in Fort Wayne is a favorite for me, for lamb lollipops and their twist on chicken and waffles.”
